Of particular concern for the eutrophication predicament is population in coastal areas which is expected to grow from 1.2 billion people (c. 1990) to between 1.8 and 5.2 billion by the 2080s (Rabalais et al 2008) . Managing coastal eutrophication on regional to global scales requires both more comprehensive detection and monitoring of nutrient inputs and their impacts, especially, as noted in section “Global Trends and Patterns,” in the southern hemisphere (Altieria et al., 2017; Diaz et al., 2019). In addition, efforts to reverse eutrophication and accelerate oligotrophication require more comprehensive strategies to reduce eutrophication than simply reducing nutrient inputs to coastal watersheds. Eutrophication has become a global aquatic environmental problem because of its ecological consequences, such as frequent outbreaks of algal blooms threatening the reliable supply of drinking water. It may result in oxygen depletion of the water body.
